See how fabulous our tree is looking with all the hand decorated baubles? Great work Eagles!
December - the season of Advent and assessment in Eagles Class! This week we have been demonstrating our learning by completing assessments in maths, writing, reading comprehension, spelling and grammar. More exciting has been the arrival of a beautiful Christmas tree for our classroom, kindly provided by Mrs Browne. Thankyou! We spent an great morning in Tewkesbury Abbey getting ready for our forthcoming Carol Concert. What a fantastic privilege to be able to celebrate Christmas in such awesome surroundings- we are really looking forward to it!
This week we are celebrating the writing of our own Mr Brixey, who used all of his writing targets to produce this magnificent story based on Christmas Eve 1914. Can you identify any of the writing targets he has used? Which part of his writing do you like best? Why? Are there any techniques you could "magpie" in your own writing? How might he improve his first draft? Have a good weekend everyone - and don't forget your maths homework and spellings! There was an air of great anticipation in Eagles Class today when a panel of important people came to hear about our brilliant innovations. The Innovation panel included Mark Cummings from Radio Gloucestershire, Jessica Birch from Learnpad, Mrs Godzisz and Mr Nolan. If you want to find out more, tune in to The Mark Cummings Breakfast Show on Monday morning to hear some of our ideas as well as our "...It's Ten to Eight" recording.
Harrison: "Today was such a good day! Me, Paul and Kieran got to show our innovation - the Super Scissor stand." Amber: "Today, I had the most wonderful but scary day. I had to speak out loud to a panel of experts. In the end our invention (The Handy Helper Storage System) won the prize for best idea. I am personally really proud of myself!" Courtney: "It was amazing! I'm so glad I met those engineers!" Scott: "Today was an epic day. I had lots of fun but when it was our turn I got really really scared. But when I got up I got used to it and it was fun." Paul: " Today was such a fun day. When I got up I thought that this wouldn't work out well, but what happened was the opposite! Well done everyone that tried and thanks to Mr Nolan, Mark Cummings, Jessica Birch and Mrs Godisz for joining us" Ollie: "Today was the best day of my life. When I walked in the class, the tables were all in lines and in the middle of the room was the circle table with four names on cards. Mrs Troughton called out our names and we went to the front of the class to talk about our product. Then we had a break before the winners were called out." Aleisha: " When \i went up to the judges, I was a bit scared because I have never spoken to people like that before, but when I started speaking everything that was scaring me just went away. I was proud of me and Bridie because we won the competition. I liked doing the competition because it was exciting and fun and on Monday at ten to eight we will be on the radio!" Nicole: "Today I felt nervous. I definitely had a tickle in my tummy and I was scared to stand up. When it came to my group I felt nervous and I kept laughing but then they started to ask me questions about my invention and I knew there wasn't anything to worry about any more."
On Wednesday 11th November at 11 O'Clock, Eagles class took part on the act of remembrance in Tewkesbury. As we stood around the cross, we all had the chance to experience two minutes of silent reflection. We found it to be a very moving experience and one that we will not forget.
What a busy time we have had in Eagles Class this week! We've been brushing up on our addition, solving some really tricky problems and using our reasoning skills, as well as reading a variety of short stories in preparation for writing some of our own for the younger children. We have designed, built and evaluated bridges using just 4 sheets of paper - some of them were able to support the weight of 50 cubes! We have been thinking about how to improve these - does anyone have any suggestions? Also this week we visited the Soul Space where everyone had the opportunity to reflect on the world around us. We had lots of discussion and all agreed that it was a fantastic way to explore in different ways. Everyone agreed that the highlight of our week was the visit to Bristol to see Mary Poppins. We were very excited to see our old friends The Clifton Suspension Bridge and SS Great Britain, but The Bristol Hippodrome took our breath away with its golden radiators and stylish decor. Please ask us about the show - it was AWESOME... although Mr Brixey admitted he was a bit worried when Mary Poppins flew straight over his head!
Have a great weekend everyone and stay safe on Bonfire Night.
